'01 - '02 Varsity Ice Hockey Game Summaries
DATE: December 10, 2001
OPPONENT: Portledge School (Away)
After starting off on the wrong foot, the Pirates
finally get a victory against interstate rival
Portledge, New York. Seton Hall had goals from four
different players as opposed to Portledge's single
goal. The goal scorers for the Blue and White were:
Alex Sopko, Scott Eberenz, Nick Silvestri, and Dustin
Kennedy.
DATE: December 15, 2001
OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (Home)
Seton Hall took it to the reigning state champs
tonight, beating them 3-2. Scott Eberenz scored two
goals for The Hall as they outshot the Crusaders
33-29. The other Pirate goal was scored by
Jon Manci.
DATE: December 21, 2001
OPPONENT: Brick (Away)
After a questionable goal call by the referees, Seton
Hall settled for a 3-3 tie with Brick. Freshman Bryan
Haczyk scored his first goal as a Pirate; other Pirate
goal scorers were Ryan Collis and Jason DelPiano.
Scott Eberenz, Nick Silvestri, and Dan Cullen all
contributed with one assist apiece.
DATE: January 5, 2002
OPPONENT: Christian Brothers Academy (Home)
The Pirates sought revenge and got it by defeating
the Colts of CBA, 4-1. Nick Silvestri got The Hall on
the board by scoring a goal that was assisted by
Dustin Kennedy. Next, Jon Manci deked out the
opposing goaltender to put the Blue and White ahead
2-0. The third goal by Seton Hall was a thing of
beauty; Jason DelPiano chipped the puck out of his
own zone and Ryan Collis picked it up. Then, Collis
passed to Scott Eberenz and Eberenz passed back to
Collis. The CBA goalie stood no chance as Ryan
Collis tapped the puck in for the score. Closing out
the game, Scott Eberenz flicked the puck at the empty
net, and surprisingly, it went in.
DATE: January 8, 2002
OPPONENT: Notre Dame (Away)
Seton Hall got on the board early and continuously
against non-division foe Notre Dame. Jon Manci led
the onslaught scoring two goals; he almost had
number three on several occasions, but his shots
either sailed wide of the net or were halted by
the opposing goaltender. Scott Eberenz scored
a nice tap-in goal with the assist coming from Jason
DelPiano. Next, Eberenz fed Ryan Collis the puck
and Ryan finished in style. The other goal scorer
for The Hall was Anthony Ferri, his goal was assisted
by Dustin Kennedy. When the final buzzer sounded,
Seton Hall was victorious by the score of 5-2.
DATE: January 12, 2002
OPPONENT: St. Joe's Metuchen (Home)
It wasn't the most beautiful game in the world, but
somehow Seton Hall managed to eek out a victory over
St. Joe's Metuchen by the final score of 4-3. Ryan
Collis led The Hall with two goals, while Dustin
Kennedy and Nick Silvestri scored a goal apiece as
well. Brian Sokerka, Paul Alexandrov, Scott Eberenz,
and Chris Tutalo all had one assist each.
DATE: February 4, 2002
OPPONENT: St. John Vianney (Home)
Another sluggish first period start for the Blue and
White, but they turned on the jets in the second and
third periods by scoring six unanswered goals. Scott
Eberenz recorded the hat trick and that aided the
Pirates in winning by the final score of 8-2. Seton
Hall outshot St. John's 35-17.
DATE: February 20, 2002
OPPONENT: Brick (Home - Gordon Cup Semifinals)
The team is really starting to gel at the right time
of the season: playoff time. Seton Hall was led by
senior Jason DelPiano who scored two goals against
Brick, including the game winner. Bryan Haczyk
recorded a goal and an assist, Ryan Collis scored
a goal, and Anthony Ferri and Mike Maglio each had
an assist for The Hall. Brian Liguori was solid in
net making 18 saves; the Pirates outshot the Green
Dragons 42-21 en route to a 4-3 victory.
DATE: February 23, 2002
OPPONENT: St. John Vianney (Home - Gordon Cup Finals)
Bryan Haczyk, who is not the largest player in the
world, certainly played a large role in tonight's game
against St. John Vianney. Bryan scored a huge power
play goal to lift Seton Hall
above its opponent 5-2 in the final round of the
Gordon Cup. The Pirates have won the Gordon Cup three
years in a row, and for seniors like Scott Eberenz and
Jason DelPiano, who also scored for The Hall tonight,
the achievement is truly extraordinary. Eberenz also
added and assist in the game and the other assists
for the Blue and White belonged to Ryan Collis and
Jon Manci. Bryan Haczyk's classmate, Chris Tutalo,
also scored a goal for the Pirates as did sophomore
defenseman Joe Campagna.
DATE: March 8, 2002
OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (State Tournament
Parochial Semifinals at Mennen Arena)
After being upset last season by Bergen Catholic in
the semifinal round of the state tourney, the Pirates
came back with a vengeance this year and defeated
the Crusaders 3-2. Anthony Ferri started the attack
by scoring a goal in the first period, and just 8
seconds later, Adam Haczyk blasted a shot from the
blue line that hit the underside of the crossbar and
found its way into the net. Late in the game, Nick
Silvestri sealed the victory for The Hall by scoring
a goal on a nice pass from Chris Tutalo. Also
registering assists for the Blue and White were Ryan
Collis and Scott Eberenz. Brian Liguori stood on his
head in goal stopping 28 out of 30 shots.
